impact on the environment
Lasers impact our environment in many ways. For example, by using lasers, scientists working for NASA have been able to calculate cloud coverage and water vapor on earth. Also, lasers can be applied to examine our atmosphere by measuring the concentrations of aerosols and fine particles in it ("Laser Technology: Shedding Some Light"). Scientists and researchers are now looking for new ways to use laser technology to measure pollutants and the ozone layer. This will help us have further understanding of the global warming situation that we are facing today ("Laser Technology: Shedding Some Light"). There are also drawbacks from using lasers. Some lasers work at very high temperatures and require water to be used to help cool it down (Phillips). This has a negative impact on the environment as large amounts of water are wasted every year to be used as a coolant for these lasers (Phillips).
This YouTube video discusses how lasers can be used to measure atmospheric winds and carbon dioxide (Ho Laser for Simultaneous Measurements of
Atmosphere Wind and CO2)

impact on the society
In addition to the environment, lasers also affect the society in many ways. One example is the ultrafast laser. These lasers have the ability to produce clean and smooth cuts that don’t damage nearby tissues or veins; thus, it will be less likely for scars to form (Hecht). These lasers are perfect to use in surgeries that need to be delicate and precise. This type of laser is helps improve the health of our society by aiding surgeries to be more successful (Hecht).
Furthermore, lasers can be used in weaponry and army/ police training. Laser projections can be used during training to create a more realistic stimulation (Strachan). Through the help of these lasers, the army and police forces will be able to complete their duties more effectively and be able to further protect the people in our society. However, there can also be negative health impacts to our society when using lasers. For example, green laser pointers can cause damage to the eye and cause temporary blindness and disorientation (Fiorino). |
