Brief History
-Theodore Maiman was the first person to ever create a laser device (van Kessel 203). After receiving his PhD in 1955, Maiman worked with Charles Townes , whom had just discovered a device called a MASER. MASER stands for “Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission” (Goldman).
-This device, which emitted microwaves, inspired Maiman to create the laser in 1960, which emitted light waves (Goldman). LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. -Maiman’s first laser device was made from running radiowaves into a tube that had ruby in it. The result was a light beam, which Maiman called a laser, being emitted (Goldman). |
